Daniel Barnes, Age 33, Hucknall, Nottingham Adults Liver Transplant
Daniel's journey began in 2017 when he and his wife were preparing for their wedding. Wanting to shed some weight for the occasion, Daniel embarked on a weight loss journey, unaware of the health challenges awaiting him. What started as a desire to look his best for the big day soon turned into a battle for survival.
After experiencing rapid weight loss, Daniel's family became concerned and urged him to seek medical attention. Little did he know, this decision would change his life forever. Diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC), a rare liver disease, Daniel faced a tumultuous journey filled with hospital visits and health setbacks.
In 2019, Daniel's condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to a critical point where he needed a liver transplant to survive. His fortunes changed when he received the call informing him that a donor liver was available. Despite facing complications post-surgery, including a temporary coma, Daniel's resilience prevailed, and he made a remarkable recovery.
With a newfound appreciation for life, Daniel, from Hucknall, immersed himself in activities he once enjoyed, including football. He joined the Nottingham adults' transplant team in 2022 representing them at the British Transplant Games in squash, badminton, bowling and football in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
Beyond sports, Daniel's story took another joyous turn when he and his wife welcomed their son into the world in 2023, fulfilling a long-held dream. Today, Daniel serves as a beacon of hope, spreading awareness about the importance of organ donation and cherishing each moment of his second chance at life.
